1901 census extract from Carnforth, Lancs

1901 Census for England & Wales

Having struggled since 1 January 2002 to extract the Hemingways from the PRO website for the 1901 Census covering England and Wales, I am pleased to be able to finally bring you a useful extract with a total of 2,825 entries.

The detail is presented as a PDF file on the linked pages '1901 Census'.  The detail is covered in quite a large file of seventy-one pages and so that will take up to a minute to load on some machines. Unlike the PRO Index, it is arranged with the family groups already sorted. You can tell the family groups by the Page and Person IDs. The Page ID is PRO code from as is the Person ID. However, family groups will normally be on a single Page ID (or on two consecutive pages if the group went on to two Enumerators pages). The Person IDs will normally run consecutively within a family group. If there is a break between them, this is usually caused by an intervening 'In-Law' or a daughter living at home who has married. This causes there to be a break as my extracts of Hemingways, obviously doesn't pick out any married women that now have a 'new surname'.

So bear in mind that this is a finding aid and not a substitute for looking at the actual Census. I have seen several errors in the index as transcribed. Some are obvious and have happened when QuinetiQ undertook the transcription - some may be 100% correct transcriptions of errors in the Census Enumerators book. I will not have added any errors as I have not retyped any of the detail. However, equally, I have not corrected any errors.
