Hemingway Civil Court Wills

All the pages on the web site associated with the Civil Court Wills can be launched from here.  If you don't know the date of death of the person whose Probate abstract you are seeking, start at position one below.  If you know their date of death, you can go straight to position two below to view the abstract.  From position three, you can find transcripts of those Wills that I have bought or been given by other researchers. (If you can share a transcript or copy of a Will, please do.)

There is one snag in publishing this information arranged by date of death.  That is it must be understood that the calendars where this information is derived, are arranged and published by year that the Will is proved.  For example, a person might die on 10 December 1883, but their Will is unlikely to be proved before early 1884. The gap between death and proving of the Will is very variable, but in the main is between two and eight months.  However, sometimes many years pass between death and the proving of the Will. For this reason, there are several abstracts of Hemingways who died before 1858. In two cases, some twenty-five years before, because the neither the Administration of Helen Hemingway of Heckmondwike or the Administration of Frederick Hemingway of Roberttown, Dewsbury were proved until 1863 despite the fact that both Helen and Frederick had died in 1838.  Equally, at the 'other end of the snag', one of your relatives might have died in a year known to you, but if their Will was not proved until a time more recent than I have so far transcribed and uploaded, they will not appear in the tables above, simply because I do not yet know of them.

Transcribing the abstract from the calendars of every Hemingway Will proved in England and Wales through the Civil Courts (that is Wills and Administrations proved after 11 January 1858) is the current main focus that I have in this One-Name Study.  My aim is to transcribe all and upload them to this website, and where I have copies of the actual Will, to transcribe and upload the Will. Of course this all takes time and costs money.  Each Will now costs £5.00 and so they are few and far between.  I am always keen to receive transcripts or photocopies of Wills to enable others to be able to gain as much as is possible from the under utilised resource.

Wills proved in other countries will be added as soon as possible.  I have a small number that have been donated, if you have one, please do consider sending me a copy to enable me to add it to the collection. Donations are acknowledged.

Where a copy of the Will is not shown as being available on this web site, I can obtain a copy for you at the same price as I am charged (currently £5.00).
